In the library, students have access to a wide range of texts. We are constantly updating our stock to ensure it remains relevant to the curriculum, and to the reading interests of the students.
As well as general fiction and non-fiction the library also has audio books and DVDs of many well-known novels. We aim to provide texts that are accessible to a wide range of reading abilities.
Each student is allowed to borrow six items at a time for a period of two weeks. We encourage students to be responsible for any items they borrow and return them to the library on time, and in good condition. We do not charge for late returns but do expect students to pay (or bring in a replacement) for any items lost or damaged.
Library lessons & accelerated reader
Students in year 7 and 8 will have one of their timetabled English lessons in the library once a fortnight. During library lessons, students will have the opportunity to take part in the Accelerated Reader programme. The programme provides students with a suggested reading range of texts best suited to their ability. Books for the Accelerated programme are arranged by difficulty, making selecting a book quick and easy. Students select and read books that match their individual ability and interest levels and then complete a short online quiz. The quiz assesses general comprehension of the book just read. Accelerated Reader stores the results of this quiz which can be accessed by the staff and students. During Library lessons students will read both independently and with members of staff.
The Library is open from 8.30am until 4.30pm Monday to Friday. At break time, the library is open to all students each day. Lunch time openings are restricted to different year groups each day. Students are welcome to visit at lunch time to select books to help with homework, to read for pleasure and to take Accelerated Reader quizzes. They can also use the computers and the chromebooks for school work. After school the library is open for homework club until 4.30pm.
