The Look of Love21/04/21
If I were to ask you to paint/draw a picture of ‘love’, I wonder what it would look like? Hearts and flowers? A mother with her new-born baby? A young couple staring adoringly into each other’s eyes? The truth is that we have an image of perfect love, yet in reality, love can be messy. The first Easter (when Jesus died on the cross in our place to save us) was the perfect example of love… but it was far from roses and flowers. It was a love that hurt, a love that had a huge, sacrificial cost. Beatings, blood, nails…that was the cost that Jesus paid for love of each one of us.
“This is how we know what true love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.” 1 John 3:16, The Bible
This week, another picture of love was on the news.
It was the picture of Queen Elizabeth II sat alone at the funeral of her beloved husband, Prince Philip after 74 years of marriage. Today is her birthday, she is 95, yet somehow, this week, she has been transformed from the mighty Queen of England to a little old widow, to be pitied by all. All the wealth and status in the world could not protect her from the common enemy we will all one day face.
Take heart…even the Queen has a King! Queen Elizabeth II regularly professes Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour and puts her trust in God, her King. She knows that death is not the end, and that there is a wonderful heavenly Kingdom for all who also put their trust in Jesus.
Because Jesus rose we too can have hope…to know we are never alone, that God is always with us; to know that true wealth is far greater than material possessions; to know that everything we do has a purpose and an effect both for this life and the next.
So as we face a new summer term, exams and all that lies beyond, let us be steadfast and press on to a brighter future, knowing that each one of has a purpose to bring God’s love into this messy world.
“So set your minds on things above.” Colossians 3:2, The Bible
