Headteacher Update 8th July 2022

Dear Parent

I hope you are well.

We have had another excellent week in school.

Sports Day took place in perfect weather on Monday – overcast and with an even more cooling breeze. Congratulations to Red House who won the Fair Play trophy and to Green House who won the Sports Day itself. Participation rates were very high and some great performances were in evidence.

230 Year 6 students attended 3 induction days and will end with a Disco this evening. This is the first time in 3 years we have been able to hold the induction days in July and the year group has made a very good impression on us. I must also commend and thank the Year 9 Buddies who were excellent in their care and leadership of the new arrivals.

Inevitably, for someone who has worked at the school since the turn of the century, an increasing number of new students are children of ex-students. It is fascinating to see these ex-students in the main entrance when they come into their old school, as we have every year group photograph since 1999 on the walls.

We have just added a brilliant year group photograph of the class of 2021. This image was never actually captured due to Covid distancing regulations at the time but we have sourced a composite photograph of each individual student taken in Year 11 and the effect is amazing.

On Tuesday of this week we held our first Evening of Dance since before the pandemic and once again it was a joy to see. Students in Years 7 – 10 took part in some amazing routines in the Caritas Hall and thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the process of entertaining the audience. Many congratulations to Ms Scott for co-ordinating the evening and preparing the dancers so wonderfully.

And finally… I was blessed to be in the presence of greatness at the Summer Music Concert last week. On the way out of the Hall at the end of the evening one of our parents told me that she had been a singer on a Number One record back in 1980 – in fact it was the Christmas Number One for that year. It transpires that she was a member of St Winifred's School Choir. If you are of a certain age you will remember the song - "There's No One Quite Like Grandma". They don’t make them like they used to.

Enjoy the weather this weekend

In Caritas et Veritas,

Mike Holland
