Headteacher Update 14th January 2022

14/01/22

Dear Parent

I hope you are well. A fairly brief epistle from me this week.

I want to start by saying how pleased I am with the positivity of both students and staff since our return to school. Students have returned to wearing face coverings in lessons without complaint and are soldiering on with it admirably. Let’s hope that we can continue to maintain very good levels of attendance for students and staff and that we can avoid having to move to online learning for year groups or all students.

We are expecting a further delivery of Lateral Flow Tests today. If and when they arrive we will distribute them to students (next week) and would ask that you continue to supervise your child completing a test on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. There was another rule change earlier this week so that if the LFT is positive but there are no symptoms, there is no need to follow this up with a PCR – just self-isolate following the national guidance and inform us and the NHS.

What’s on this term? Please look out for an email from Miss Peña next week if you have a child in Year 7 - 10 in which there is a link to a 7 minute presentation outlining the key curriculum and other events that are taking place this term. It is our intention to produce this presentation termly from now on.

And finally… one of my Christmas presents this year was a 2-month subscription to a TV channel to allow me to watch the Ashes Cricket series. I think this proves the point that we have to be careful what we wish for.

Another present I received was from some friends who know that I am trying to visit all 92 Football League grounds. I have seen professional football played at well over 100 grounds but I still have 20 more to go; this mathematical contradiction happens when clubs build new grounds or drop out of the league into oblivion. The present was a scratch-card map of Football League grounds for the 2021 – 2022 season. My dilemma was that I have 5 clubs – Hull City, Bristol Rovers, Brentford, Wimbledon, Oxford United – whose past grounds I have visited but who now have new grounds. It took me a while before I felt able to scratch these clubs off; I used to think I was indecisive but now I’m not so sure.

There is a bit of a sporting theme going on here – at least it takes my mind off hand sanitiser, face coverings and ventilation.

In Caritas et Veritas,

Mike Holland
