The Aims and Objectives of the Department

We aim the develop skills & attributes to enable pupils to become lifelong participants in sport and physical activity.

Through PE pupils develop essential leadership skills through leading others in lessons and in Year 9,10 & 11 pupils have the opportunity to become Junior Sports Leaders to help with activities in the High School and local Primary schools.

Throughout the school, pupils can join our extensive range of extra-curricular activities including dance, kick-boxing, gymnastics and athletics. I addition we run successful teams in Netball, Hockey, Football, Rugby, Cricket and Rounders. A large number of pupils represent Cheshire in a range of sports and are on our Junior Athlete Education Programme which helps our Gifted & Talented pupils to fulfil their potential. We offer pupils the chance to try new and exciting sports and activities such as rocket-ball, skateboarding and capoeira through the taster sessions during National Sports Week as well as individual taster sessions

PE at Key Stage 3

Pupils have 2 hours of compulsory PE lessons. As a sports college we offer an extensive range of opportunities where pupils will develop knowledge and understanding in a variety of sports including:

Netball, Hockey, Football, Rugby, Cricket, Rounders, Gymnastics, Dance, Orienteering and Softball

 

In Years 7 + 8 pupils develop essential skills in a wide range of sports and develop team work and basic leadership skills. In Year 9 pupils work towards a Hartford High School diploma where they can gain a pass, merit or distinction. They will complete units including health & fitness as well as basic anatomy and physiology.

 

PE at Key Stage 4

Pupils will follow different courses depending on their sets. Set 1 pupils will take the full course GCSE qualification.

This entails pupils choosing 4 sports to be assessed in, which is worth 60% of the final mark and a theory exam making up the final 40%. In theory lessons, pupils will learn about health and fitness, how the body works for sport, principles of training, the media & sport and international sports.

 

Pupils in Set 2 will follow a half GCSE, which entails studying 2 assessed sports and ad a theory aspect.

 

Pupils can chose to follow a BTEC qualification (either the Diploma or Certificate) within the option choices which is equivalent to either 4 or 2 GCSE grades. Pupils will complete 6 or 3 units and gain a pass, merit or distinction.

 

Pupils are invited to become Junior Sports Leaders which is worth 6 GCSE points and pupils can also gain a number of accreditations, for example: Junior Football Organiser, Hockey Refereeing, Young Netball Leader or Junior Dance Leader
